Kettering Rotary  - 1/9/13

The Kettering Rotary met at Presential Banquet Center on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. The meeting was called to order by President Don Walls who welcomed the group to the first meeting of the New Year. As is tradition, the club celebrated the month’s birthdays.

Mel Haines reminded the group to update their information on the website and an announcement of the slate of Rotary officers for 2013-2014 was read. Nominations were requested. No nominations were provided from the floor and the officers were approved.

Mel gave the invocation.

Our Birthday Chair, Tom Minnich, led the birthday celebration by introducing all those with their birthday’s during the month of January.

The January birthdays included:

Paul Halcomb (1/3) who has served as a Rotarian since July of 1972

Bud Ragan (who is still in Florida) (1/4) a Rotarian since 1982

Don Whip (1/7) a Rotarian since 1965, our longest serving Rotarian and very special for his 48 years of perfect attendance!

Bobbie Roland-Gorman (1/11) serving in Rotary since 1988

And last but not least Don Patterson (1/14) a member of Rotary since 1993

Tom Minnich led the birthday song for the group and then went onto lead both the song and pledge. “God Bless America” was the song of choice.

Andy Scholes served as the Sergeant of Arms. He sat at the greeter table taking notes while eavesdropping on conversations. Fines were issued to Beth for her support of Notre Dame, Jeff Lewis for his constant complaining, Kathy Johnson for not wearing a Rotary pin (a newspaper photo served as evidence), Tim Leist for his motorskills, Don Patterson for setting record attendance, Norm for griping about how hard the greeter position is, and Missy Mae for being deprived as a child (she has never been  sledding).

Jane Black, the Executive Director of the Dayton Art Institute, served as this week’s speaker. She informed the group of new programs being sponsored by the Institute. She as well spoke about how the Institute is trying to become a more welcoming place for all in the community. Jane is a product of the South Suburbs and was once a student of President Don Walls in elementary school.  Ms. Black is very passionate about the DAI and welcomed all to visit and obtain membership in the organization.

Don Patterson’s ticket was drawn for Luck of the Draw but he did not pick the right card.

Missy Mae Walters – Scribe for the day.
