Life in the USN - Both Land and Sea

A son of Dayton, our own Commander Leon W. Moore returns to our Club after having visited us during Navy Week 2022! Commander is the Executive Officer of the Navy Reserve Navy Office of Community Outreach in Millington, Tennessee. He assumed the position February 2022.

Commander Moore previously served as the Officer-in-Charge at Navy Reserve Navy Public Affairs Support Element in Norfolk, Virginia. A native of Dayton, Ohio, he enlisted in the Navy in 1990. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia and an Associates of Applied Science in Information Systems from Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. He received his commission through Direct Commission Officer in 2003. He is a graduate of the Defense Information School’s Public Affairs Officer Qualification, Joint Contingency and Joint Intermediate Courses, Fort Meade, Maryland.

His previous reserve assignments as a public affairs action officer and department head include Navy Information Bureau 108, Atlanta, Georgia; Fleet Public Affairs Center, Norfolk; Joint Public Affairs Support Element, Suffolk, Virginia; Expeditionary Combat Camera, Norfolk; Navy Community Outreach, Millington, Tennessee; and Navy Reserve Navy Public Affairs Support Element Headquarters, Norfolk.

His reserve deployments include Public Affairs Officer, Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Djibouti, Horn of Africa and Public Affairs Officer, Combined Joint Task Force Paladin, Bagram, Afghanistan.

His active-duty assignments in the Data Processing and Information Technology fields include USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65); Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, London, United Kingdom; Enlisted Education Advancement Program, Hampton, Virginia; and United States Joint Forces Command, Norfolk.

          In his civilian position, Commander Moore is a Public Affairs Specialist at Defense Logistics Agency Aviation, Richmond, Virginia.

His personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Joint Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
