The Great American Jazz Story
Jul. 13, 2022
Jimmy teaches Jazz at U.D. Armed with his sweet horn and, if we're lucky, his singing voice, he will teach and entertain us about the world of American Jazz, one of USA's unique contributions to the world of music. Don't miss this one! Jimmy has a deep history with Rotary. During his first job teaching public school music in grades 1-12 in the late 1980s, he was a member of the Eureka Springs (AR) Rotary Club in District 611 and also served as its president and co-chair of the 1990 district convention. Needless to say, that club did a lot of singing of Rotary songs. For two years recently, he was a member of the Dayton Rotary Club (which does not sing and doesn’t want to). Born and raised in Oklahoma with parents as musicians, Jimmy was surrounded by music from birth. His father was a singer and church choir director; his mother was a singer and pianist and organist who taught piano students after school every week day. Jimmy’s two brothers and sister all played in band and sang in choirs. After singing in church and school choirs and taking piano lessons through the fifth grade, he began trumpet in the sixth grade. During high school, Jimmy was in band, orchestra, choir and studied private trumpet, voice, piano, and organ and this mostly continued through his undergraduate and graduate degrees in music. Jimmy's teaching assignments have included rural Arkansas public schools, colleges in Oklahoma, Michigan, Kansas, North Dakota and Harvard University where he received three teaching awards as a graduate assistant in jazz history, music theory, and music history. Jimmy’s performance have included classical, jazz, pop, and early music with performances with Johnny Mathis, Shirley Jones, Disney World, Opryland, and Boston Lyric Opera. While in Boston, he performed the national anthem for the Red Sox with the Boston Symphony Orchestra with John Williams conducting. He also soloed on the national anthem for another Red Sox game against Texas. Jimmy has been at UD for five years where he has taught various courses in ear training, jazz, and pedagogy. He performs with two UD faculty groups: the brass quintet and the jazztet. The Jimmy Leach Jazztet has performed at the Dayton Art Institute, the Wright Memorial Library, David’s Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal, and the Levitt Pavilion, where he’ll be next Friday July 22 and tomorrow night at the Art Institute. He recently became the music director and organist at Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington, Kentucky.

Don't Jump Out of Your Window... at Least Not Yet
Jul. 20, 2022 11:30 a.m.
With more than twenty years' experience in the financial services industry and at Morgan Stanley, Jim guides clients with individual investments and retirement planning. Managing wealth involves far more than managing an investment portfolio. It begins with developing a holistic, comprehensive understanding of who you are and the financial forces at work in your life. It means helping you understand and respond effectively to these forces. And, of course, it means helping you invest your assets in a way that reflects the realities of your life and the uniqueness of your long-term goals. Areas of focus: Comprehensive wealth management that includes retirement planning, investment planning, estate planning strategies and long-term care planning. As one of our past presidents and highly active Rotarians, Kettering Rotary is honored to welcome Jim to our Speaker's Podium. |

All About Birds
Aug. 17, 2022
Here's a real treat for all of us who celebrate our colorful wildlife of Southern Ohio. A veteran of the United States Airforce, Jim is really into things that fly. He has crisscrossed the U.S. for forty years pursuing his love of photography and the richness of American birds. Originally from Baltimore Maryland, Jim studied at the University of Maryland where he learned the keen differences between the Terrapin and the Buckeye. And now that Terps and Buckeyes are Big Ten Brothers and Sisters, well… we are delighted to welcome Jim to the Kettering Rotary podium. Join us for an hour together of fun and learning! And thanks Tim Leist for connecting us with Jim.

Sep. 04, 2022 9:00 a.m. - Sep. 05, 2022 7:00 p.m.
Calling all Rotarians. We are so excited to have our second year for our Holiday at Home Kettering Rotary Poffertjes booth!!! September 4 & 5 (Sunday & Monday) - And we need your help!
Volunteers are needed to help make and “decorate“ the Poffertjes, to collect money and hand out the orders. I have set up the schedule for 2 hour shifts for both Sun and Mon, with the beginning shift as part of set-up and the ending shift as part of clean-up. We are looking for 4 people per shift and if you want to do more than 1 shift - please feel free to sign up for consecutive shifts. This is a time when we ask you to recruit your friends and family to volunteer with us - it is a great way to introduce someone to Rotary.
What are poffertjes? Mini buckwheat & yeast Dutch pancakes topped with lots of butter, powdered sugar and toppings! (It's really all about those toppings!)
It's easy and fun to make them. We hope to have this become a signature item associated with our club. We might have a 'learning curve' this year - but for sure we'll have a lot of fun!

Casseroles of Hope
Oct. 26, 2022
Doyle & JoAnn Key are residents of Clearcreek Township. Doyle has lived in Dayton and the surrounding area all of his life and JoAnn came to Dayton from Niles, Ohio for a job after graduating from Miami University. They have been involved in feeding the homeless for over 25 years with the casseroles program through St. Vincent DePaul for St. Vincent Hotel. They also managed and worked a community dinner in Franklin at their Church for 7 years. When their church moved to Springboro, they transitioned the dinner program into a box lunch ministry. Casseroles of Hope is a community driven ministry that Doyle and JoAnn started in April of 2022 to help feed the homeless in collaboration with Hope House Mission in Middletown, Oh. The initial goal was to feed both shelters (men’s & women and children’s) once a month for a year. Casseroles of Hope now delivers 3 days every month and hopes to add day 4 next month. With the rapid growth to 80 volunteers, Doyle & JoAnn have further committed themselves with the development and launch of a new logo, website (casserolesofhope.org) and marketing materials. With the help of the community, they see no limits on how many people can be served. |

Sharon Davies is President and Chief Executive of the Kettering Foundation. American Inventor Charles F. Kettering established the Foundation in 1927 “to sponsor and carry out scientific research for the benefit of humanity.” Inspired by the open-mindedness and creative philosophy of its innovative founder, the Foundation’s research has gradually shifted to focus on democracy, particularly the role of citizens. Davies’ career experiences span both academic and non-academic fields. From 2017-2021, Davies was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Spelman College. She joined Spelman from The Ohio State University, where she was vice provost for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer. Davies was also a member of OSU’s Moritz College of Law faculty for 22 years, serving as the Gregory H. Williams Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. In addition, Davies directed the university’s Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity, an interdisciplinary engaged research institute known nationally for its work in social justice, equity, and inclusion. She also held an appointment to the Ohio Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Davies was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a Notes and Comments Editor of the Columbia Law Review while in law school at Columbia University. After graduation, she worked for Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, DC and Lord, Day & Lord Barrett Smith in New York City. She served for five years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York. Davies was the recipient of a YWCA Woman of Achievement award from the YWCA Columbus chapter (2015); the Robert M. Duncan Award by the Columbus Chapter of the American Constitution Society (April 2014) in recognition of her contributions to democracy, fostering legal education, ensuring access to justice, and preserving individual rights and the rule of law; and the Liberty Bell Award from the Columbus Bar Association (June 2013). Davies’ articles and other writings have been published in some of the nation’s leading law journals, including the Duke Law Journal, the Southern California Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, the Michigan Law Review, and Law and Contemporary Problems. In 2010, Oxford University Press published Davies’s narrative nonfiction account of a 1921 murder trial in Birmingham, Alabama, titled Rising Road: A True Tale of Love, Race, and Religion in America, for which the Mayor of Birmingham presented her with a “Key to the City.” Davies holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a law degree from Columbia University School of Law. |
