Project CLIMB - Kettering Cancer Center
Aug. 25, 2021
CLIMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery): Talking to Kids about Cancer It can be tough to have a conversation about cancer with kids. Kettering Health Cancer Care offers the CLIMB program to help children ages five – 12 cope with a loved one’s cancer diagnosis. We will take you through an outline of what happens during this six-week program and discuss why it is important to provide children a safe place to learn and express their feelings about this difficult subject. |

Sep. 05, 2021 9:00 a.m. - Sep. 06, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Calling all Rotarians. We are so excited to have our new fundraiser coming up on September 5 & 6 (Sunday & Monday) - our Holiday at Home Kettering Rotary Poffertjes booth!!! And we need your help!
Volunteers are needed to help make and “decorate“ the Poffertjes, to collect money and hand out the orders. I have set up the schedule for 2 hour shifts for both Sun and Mon, with the beginning shift as part of set-up and the ending shift as part of clean-up. We are looking for 4 people per shift and if you want to do more than 1 shift - please feel free to sign up for consecutive shifts. This is a time when we ask you to recruit your friends and family to volunteer with us - it is a great way to introduce someone to Rotary.
What are poffertjes? Mini buckwheat & yeast Dutch pancakes topped with lots of butter, powdered sugar and toppings! (It's really all about those toppings!)
It's easy and fun to make them. We hope to have this become a signature item associated with our club. We might have a 'learning curve' this year - but for sure we'll have a lot of fun!

What to expect when Coming to Skilled Nursing for Rehabilitation
Jan. 19, 2022
We will dive into the senior living options for aging loved ones ranging from independent living, assisted living and nursing homes answering questions like: what are my options and does insurance pay for care. We will explore the differences between skilled nursing care and custodial care. The question I hear over and over is “my loved one is coming for a short rehab stay; what can we bring from home” – so we will answer that question along with others related to the process of selecting a provider to going back home. |

“Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Caregiver Wellness”
Jan. 26, 2022
Gery L. Deer is an award-winning copywriter and journalist and managing partner of GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., a public relations and media firm based in Jamestown, Ohio now celebrating 25 years in business. He’s had a diverse career as a freelance journalist, editor, creative director, and copywriter, including a 2010 nomination for a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism. In 2009 Gery became a full-time caregiver for his mother, Lois, as she declined from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. During that time, although he had some help with his mom from a close cousin, his health and finances took a severe hit. But, he managed to recover to some extent and regrouped. A few short years later, he was charged with caring for his father as he began a rapid decline due to the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. This time, he was alone, but he was better prepared – or so he thought. His father, Gary, Sr., passed away in July of 2020, but for nearly four years, Gery included him in activities that helped both maintain better physical health. Gery’s presentation, “Caregiving and the Old Nerd,” is based on the challenges faced by the nearly 43 million Americans who are “informal” (unpaid) family Caregivers. From poverty to poor health, Caregivers are saving the government and private industry billions while struggling to make ends meet because they chose to do what was best for their charges. Gery will also discuss the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast and Blog, both free media productions of his company, and ways that you can directly improve the lives of Caregivers you may know.
