Club Project Spotlight

This week we'd like to spotlight two of our successful community projects! Bob Walsh & June Smith head up our Senior Care Project each month. This week Bob gave us a great presentation of all the things we've done for the four Franklin Foundation Senior Living facilities. From gift bags and PPE during the pandemic, to in person concerts, BBQ's and Poffertjes Parties once we could join them in person, our club has made an impact to these seniors.

Another group of 'Seniors' would be our STRIVE Kettering Fairmont Senior Students that Missy Mae heads up with Victor Colon at KFHS. This past month we joined our students for pizza and an art project at Rosewood Arts center. The school year is almost up, so mentors please consider nominating your student for at scholarship. Just email them Missy Mae!

Amazing donation that Rotarian Jana brought back from Brazil. We're thankful and amazed at the generosity of Abstract Artist Vengerick for this donation. It's an incredible story of things coming together in mysterious ways. We hope you'll join us at the Mayor's Party for a Purpose and bid on this beautiful painting with a wonderful journey!

STRIVE at Rosewood Arts Center

Our second Kettering Rotary Club STRIVE event… we had 33 Fairmont seniors in attendance. They loved their guest speaker Atalie Gagnet! Atalie Gagnet of Dayton, Ohio is a mural graphics and sign painter since 2003. She has painted for the Guggenheim and Architectural Digest for Art Basel Miami. She is driven by serving small businesses and communities through her work. She designed the mural on the Rosewood Arts Centre. The students as well became artists themselves - designing Gelli Art Prints!

Thank you Kettering Fairmont High School for letting your students participate today. Thank you to Missy Mae Walters and Melinda Moore for a great lunch, speaker and project! Thank you to all the mentors who came to support their students. It was truly fun.

Senior Care Project Concert at Mary Irene Gardens

Close to 20 residents, staff and Rotarians enjoyed the performance of Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's String Quintet at Mary Irene Gardens on Monday, 23 January.  Mary Irene Gardens is one of the four Franklin Foundation's fixed-income senior housing apartment buildings in Kettering that Kettering Rotary supports.  The quintet's cellist, Christina Coletta, said that it was wonderful for them to perform for an adult audience -- their last four "gigs" had been for grade school audiences!  The repertoire was mostly classical with several nostalgic pieces at the end.  The bassist, Jon Pascolini, said that this particular double bass was handmade of spruce and maple.  The maker numbered each instrument he made.  This is #9 and there is an ~6-inch "9" etched on the back; he etched the 9 planets on the back also.

STRIVE BOWLING EVENT!

story thumbnail
This week we met with our STRIVE students for a fun morning of bowling, pizza and soda and a great speaker Ty Corbitt. It was a great way to connect with students and hear inspiring words that lifted us all up. What fun it was to see the kids bowling (wild swings everywhere) and here laughter and encouragement. We appreciate all the members and mentors who joined us. Thank you to Missy Mae and the counselors at Fairmont for putting it all together.

Passing of the Gavel

Bill Lindahl did the honors of swearing in our new President and Board of Directors this week. Congratulations to Ted Rameriz on his 'Imagine Kettering / Imagine Rotary' year ahead. Ted had a great presentation of his first Rotary International Convention. He also told us how he intends to move our club forward with membership goals and continued community support.

President Bill had a special 'farewell' concert for us last week with two of our members, both violinists, performing at our meeting. Dona and Bruce were amazing and Dona also played a duet with a harmonic player as well. What a gift to our club - thank you Bill, Kathy, Dona and Bruce!

Heartfelt thanks to our friends at Kroger

Rotarian Bob Walsh reached out to the local Kroger's at  2115 E Dorothy Ln. The manager Mr. James McCurdy was very interested in our Senior Care Program and is helping us give each resident a gift card for groceries. Mr. McCurdy donated 5 of the 24 gift cards needed. Truly helping our club with our goals and impacting lives of Seniors in need. Bob also extended an invitation to him to visit (or join) our club. If you happen to see Mr. McCurdy at a meeting or in the store, please be sure to thank him for his generous partnership.

The last 'concert' of the season!

This week we had the last concert of the season for our Senior Care Project. The residents of Acorn Walk had a real treat with a trio from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra playing everything from Classical to Zydeco Jazz with a few show tunes thrown in the mix as well. Thank you to Kathy Lindahl and Bob Walsh for setting up these very special events for our area seniors. They truly enjoyed them (lots of toe tapping!)

Rotary After Hours is Back!

We had a fun time lifting a pint or two (a few delicious cold brew coffees and wine as well) Originally our social was to be at Creative Flags and Poles, but alas, about 1/2 hour before the event the owner had to cancel. No worries, we quickly grabbed a table at Eudora's . Mark your calendar for April 21 - Location to be announced!

DPO Brass Quintet Performs at Mary Irene Gardens

In the second installment of KRC’s partnership with the DPO, their Brass Quintet played for the residents of Mary Irene Gardens on January 7, 2022.  The lively crowd comprised about 70% of the residents.  The repertoire was similar to the previous day’s and everyone enjoyed the banter amongst the five musicians.  We learned a little history of each one’s music career; one got his start in a military band.  While trying to explain how to play the trombone, Chad Arnow asked if anyone played a woodwind, and yes, we had a flautist in the room!  One lady said that she just couldn't sit still during such fun music.  The residents, musicians and the 6 KRC rotarians enjoyed refreshments provided by the facility.  At the end, Kathy Lindahl announced that anyone can buy $5.00 tickets to performances of the orchestra, opera, and ballet.  They are limited but call the box office at 937-228-3630.  Thanks to Rotarian Bob Walsh for arranging the performance.

DPO Brass Quintet Performs at Kettering Park Manor

The residents of Kettering Park Manor were treated to a performance of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s (DPO) Brass Quintet on January 6, 2022.  We heard comments such as “My Dad played in a Big Band orchestra,” and “In Jersey, my Dad owned the club where all the big names played: Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey brothers…, and “Oh, my, that was lovely!”  The program included big band songs, songs from Cole Porter musicals, and other 40’s music.  Bob Walsh, head of KRC’s Senior Care Project, has arranged for all four Franklin Foundation facilities in Kettering to have one of DPO’s ensembles (two in January and the other 2 in March).  This all began with a chance conversation between Ruth Reveal, Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s (DPAA) Chief Learning Officer and Rotarian Kathy Lindahl.  Since Bob booked all four of the facilities in our project, DPAA gave us a discount.  “You drive a hard bargain, Bob!”

Some of our members joined the Kettering Backpack Program on Saturday to stuff special bags for the Thanksgiving break. We love the 'Smile' and 'Gobble' notes on the front. Hopefully it will brighten the break for those kids that need food and a little 'Rotary' love. We had a poffertjes party!

What a fun day with the residents of Birchwood Manor. Rotarians June Smith, Bob Walsh and Bill and Kathy Lindahl provided a poffertjes party this afternoon.  What is a poffertjes you ask? It's a Dutch treat often served at fairs and on the streets. Mini yeast and buckwheat pancakes , slathered with butter and a generous dose of powdered sugar. Add some special toppings and you've got a yummy treat! Good news! YOU can try them at Holiday at Home at the Rotary booth on Labor day weekend!

Firefighter of the Year (TIMES TWO!)

Today we celebrated and welcomed our Kettering Firefighters of the Year, the Chief and Assistant Chief to our club. Since the pandemic derailed last year's event, we had the honor of giving two awards today. The 2020 Firefighter of the Year was Kris Denlinger. The 2021 Firefighter of the Year is Jordan Grogean. Both men received an award, cash gift and plaque. Mayor Patterson will also make a presentation later this month at the City Council meeting on behalf of the city and our club. We also heard about the impact of the pandemic on our local fire department. The compliance of procedures, PPE and other regulations filled up three binders! We appreciate the sacrifices our first responders make for our community every day. We are appreciative of the support that our City officials give to them so they can do their jobs safely and effectively. Congratulations to both men.

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat DeWine Presents All About the Ohio Supreme Court

Kettering Rotary hosts Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat DeWine

We had another amazing speaker this week. Justice Pat DeWine came to our meeting and discussed all about the Ohio Supreme Court. It was informative and fun as he walked us through a case to demonstrate how cases make it to the OSC and the process the Justice's use to resolve a case.  We appreciated Justice DeWine taking the time to come and speak to us.
Wednesday is the happiest day of the week!
If you are a Kettering Rotarian, you know why! If you aren't, follow our page and visit us as a guest sometime. Always something GOOD going on!

Welcome Back!

Kettering Rotary welcomed Matt Warhaftig back to our club. Mel Haines stood as sponsor, with Bruce Jump officiating the Induction. Matt, we're so happy you are back. Matt was a long time Kettering Rotary member but had a job change. His commitment to Rotary remained as he joined a club in Wilmington. Now he's back in Kettering and back 'HOME'.

Thank you to Kathy Lindahl for taking photos of today's meeting.

SENIOR CARE PACKAGES DELIVERED!

Bob Walsh delivered our Senior Care Packages to Birchwood Place in Kettering this week. Thank you Bob! Thank you to every Rotarian who donated items, funds and time assembling the bags. The seniors truly appreciate it. Each month we deliver a little bit of joy of things seniors need and want - and spread the Goodwill of Rotary! Kettering Rotary Foundation Pledges $1,000.00 to the South YMCA!

We are happy to partner with the YMCA South, in Kettering. Our fellow Rotarian, Melinda Moore, is Executive Director and presented to both our club and our Board of Directors in April. We felt a pledge of $1,000.00 would impact many families and individuals in our community. The YMCA provided pandemic child care, food and other resources during 2020. In addition to helping people keep healthy and provide day and overnight camps for children of all economic means, the YMCA is a vital part of keeping Kettering a great place to live, work and play!

An Awesome Day of Celebration

Today was a very special day with much to celebrate. First we celebrated Bruce Jump who joined our club in 1970! That's over 50 years of service to our club and community! Bruce then inducted our newest Rotarian, Kamran James. Kamran is originally from Pakistan and is eager to join our community and club. He's an amazing individual and I hope you all get a chance to chat with him one on one soon. He will be speaking to our club on May 19th, and I can tell you his journey here is nothing short of amazing. I'm proud to have him as a member!

Our speaker was Dr. Jamie Yunger MD who has been on the front lines of treating COVID patients for the past year. He had an interesting timeline of events, what they knew and didn't know and how they 'learned along the way'. The inspiring news is that with the vaccines, our future looks like it's going to be 'back to normal' soon. Rotarian Ted Ramirez prepared a special presentation to Dr. Yunger. We gifted artwork from a local artist that shows the sacrifice he and his fellow physicians across our nation and here in our region have made. We appreciate the sacrifices of every healthcare worker and their families. It was nice to have his wife and daughter there for the special presentation.

After the meeting we prepared 24 gift bags for senior residents at one of the Franklin Foundation centers. We gave crossword puzzle books, socks, lip balm, home-made candies, sanitizing wipes and handwritten notes on cards to brighten their days. Look for our emails going out for next months donation list. Thank you to Bob Walsh & Kathy Lindahl for spearheading this project.

A day like today is what Rotary is truly about: Friendship, community, giving, sharing, honoring and celebrating. We hope you were inspired today. You inspire me every day with your spirit of generosity!

Mask Project 2.0!

EDIT: Our club donated over 1,500 masks and collected $4,000.00 in donations that will be used for Food Banks and other community projects.

Our club has donated more than 400 masks to area nursing homes! We're still sewing!

The need for masks now that the CDC has recommend every individual wear them if in public is overwhelming. We are doing our part to get them to those who need them. They are free to anyone who needs them, but if they are able to make a donation to our club foundation - we can do even more positive things in our community - like support food banks, scholarships and other non-profits. The most important thing though is for everyone to stay well.

Below are photos of some of the prints - these are colorful - and the selection varies daily (I promise they aren't all 'girly') ! The masks are machine washable, have a wire at the top to mold to your nose, a pocket to insert a filter or extra layer of protection such as a tissue, coffee filter or hepa filter. According to the CDC machine washing is enough to sanitize your masks. DO NOT PUT IN THE MICROWAVE!  Some tie on, some have elastic or performance fabric loops. If you need them, contact us and we'll do our best to help.

Mask Project 2.0! 2020-04-08 04:00:00Z 0

We're in this together - Let's do our part! 1,000,000 masks nationwide!

Hello Rotarians,

Our club is supporting the million mask challenge. Home sewers across the nation are making reversible masks for health care workers and essential employees that will be needing them. These masks are NOT N95 that would be effective against the COVID-19 virus, but these masks are crucial for freeing up those masks for the health care workers who need them the most. These can be used by workers who are seeing patients that are non-COVID-19, or who are not in direct contact. So they are important with what's coming.  I will add the mask pattern to the download section to the left for those who sew or know sewers.

Brenda is spearheading our clubs efforts. Don's wife, Donna is sewing, Peter is mobilizing a team at the hospital to make 2,000 of them and others are donating supplies for sewers and contacting other sewers.

We need help with supplies! Send them to Brenda or she can pick up when she does a grocery run next time. If you order on line you can send directly to her home.

Fabric - 100% cotton, colorful. The masks are reversible and each side should be a different color. If you can gather 1-2 yards for us that is helpful.
Elastic 1/4" - any color, but it won't work if it's wider (it pops off the ears) THIS IS IN SHORT SUPPLY Please look for this on your grocery outings. Most grocery stores have a small notion section. Dollar General also might have them.
Wire, paper clips - I think I have enough of these but if you plan on making them you will need wire so the nose can form to the face more securely.

Click the video (photo on left) to hear what we're doing and how the masks are constructed.

KRC Member Bob Lamb to be Honored on Veterans Day in Centerville

The City of Centerville will honor Bob Lamb for his service along with other Veterans at the city’s Veterans Day Ceremony, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Stubbs Park, 255 West Spring Valley Pike. Please try and attend this wonderful presentation.

We're so proud of you Bob - your service to our Country and our club is always inspiring.
Bob Lamb served in the Army Air Corps between 1943 and 1946. He was a bombardier instructor for six months and spent a year as a navigator on a B-25 in the Western Pacific after having earned his wings as an aerial navigator and bombardier.

Lamb says within the span of three or four weeks in 1945, his squadron experienced four incidents involving the deaths of 19 of their own men and an unknown number of Army soldiers. During one of his missions, Lamb was part of a group asked to give ground support to American infantrymen on an island in the Philippines. Because of the strategy employed by his bomb group, which involved low level strafing and bombing, they had only one plane equipped with a bombsight for high altitude operations.
The bombardier in the lead plane was to focus on a smoke bomb fired into the Japanese held location by our infantry, but it was snuffed out by the enemy and one of their own was sent back. The bombardier became confused and signaled “bombs away” over their territory.

Only the lead squadron released their bombs since the other three saw the error in time. However, the lead squadron of six planes had to repeat the original pattern for the other eighteen to unload on a correctly positioned smoke bomb.

Two of Lamb’s original crew were killed near Borneo in another “friendly fire” incident. After the war, Lamb took the opportunity to visit their families in Illinois and Kansas.
In New Guinea kunai grass grows up to 15 feet tall. Returning from a mission, the U.S. B-25s were forced to fly so low that grass was picked out of the engine cowlings after landing.

Only last year, 206 letters Lamb wrote to his parents were discovered in a storage area, as well as copies of the 130 letters they sent to him.

Each year KHN holds a Mission Conference.
Part of the event includes an evening of music inspiration.
As partners with KHN in the Tornado Relief and in the Tour de Gem, I would invite the members of our KRC to join this event should they wish.
Note – the doors open at 6 – this is a very popular singer – used to be known as Third Day so expect a large following.

Don Walls - My Trip to Japan as an Educator

In the 1970's .Don was one of 14 educators that had a private invitation to travel to Japan from a gentleman who ran prestigious private schools there.
Today Don shared some great memories and memorabilia with us. Many highlights of his trip were both funny and heartwarming.
Here you see his lovely assistant, Marilynne, modelling a traditional Kimono.
He showed several postcards of drawings of Hiroshima, as depicted by the survivors.

Two fond farewell's and our new BOD.

Today was a bittersweet day for us. So many changes - so much love.
We thanked Don Wall's for being our Club's first 'Two Timer' President and hope he'll enjoy his status as, Past President, once again. He was truly an amazing leader and helped our club grow this year.

We also said a final 'Goodbye' to Russ Holtz for his 19 years of service to our Club as he moves to sunny Florida. We wish him all the best. You will be missed Russ.

We say 'See Ya Soon' to Amy Schrimpf as she will be moving to the Social Club instead of our regular club. She will be our STRIVE Liaison for the Social Club. She also vows to pop in now and again to visit with us for lunch.

MS Check Presentation and Flag Day Tribute

Today was a special day - a day to honor our flag with a Flag Folding Ceremony and a poem about the 13 folds. Bob Lamb read the following as Don and Larry demonstrated the proper folding.

The Thirteen Folds of Our Flag

  1. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
  2. The second fold signifies our belief in eternal life.
  3. The third fold is made in honor and tribute of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace.
  4. The fourth fold exemplifies our weaker nature as citizens trusting in God; it is to Him we turn for His divine guidance.
  5. The fifth fold is an acknowledgment to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
  6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
  7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies.
  8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.
  9. The ninth fold is an honor to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty, and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
  10. The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first-born.
  11. The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  12. The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost.
  13. The last fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

Honoring Andy!

We also honored long time Rotarian (we miss you!) Andy as we presented the Regional MS Society with a check in his honor. The funds were raised with our Social Membership's Romer's Night out and our clubs participation in the MS Walk-a-Thon. A job well done Rotarians!

Dayton Mediation and A Check for a Student Exchange!

Today we had Michelle Zaremba the Director of Dayton Mediation program tell us all about how mediation works in the court system, with private citizens and even in some corporate environment through their great work.

Arch Grieve also excitedly thanked our club and our foundation for sponsorship of the International Internship Exchange with Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is in partnership with the Dayton Regional STEM School, Dayton Sister City Committee, and INTERA Technology Park. (See photo of check acceptance)

This year they will be visiting Bosnia in June and then their students are expected to visit our community sometime in September. Arch is looking for host families. Hopefully we can help him out!

Our club collected much needed clothing for homeless Veteran's here in the Miami Valley. In addition to clothing over $300.00 was donated to buy new underwear and socks for the recipients as well.  On December 31st our club will also help host a New Year's Eve Party at the VA.

A big thank you to Mel Haines for spearheading this worthwhile project. We are proud to have amazing Rotarians like Mel identify a need and then take the lead for our club and community.

Our Speaker was 90 year old Navy Veteran Ralph Young who told us about  his World War II experiences and his inspiration for his two books on the subject.

Our friends from Brazil!

A special visit from Neide and Joezil Barros from the Rotary Club of Do Recife District 4500 in Pernambuco Brazil. Last year Mer and Al hosted the children for Thanksgiving and today, both parents were visiting the States and stopped by. It's always fun to have global members join us!

Pernambuco is a state in northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. Its modern capital, Recife, features a port, old town and popular beach area of Boa Viagem. Offshore, the volcanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha has a jagged coastline, undeveloped beaches and a marine park. South of Recife, reef-protected Porto de Galinhas beach offers natural pools. North lies Olinda, a colonial town amid lush vegetation. Pernambuco is the seventh-most-populous Brazilian state by population (9,277,727)

New Friends of the Club from Brazil

Our club was host to some visitors from Brazil the meeting before Thanksgiving. President Marilynne and her husband Al even invited them to join in for an American Thanksgiving feast the next day. Their generosity and that of our club earned a shout out in their local Rotary Newsletter. Here's a look at the photos and a translation of the text follows. Makes you proud to be a Kettering Rotarian, doesn't it? Making friends globally and travelling to other clubs where you are always welcomed is one of our favorite reasons it's GREAT to be a Rotarian!

'A Kiss on the Magic Spot' by Jean Lamb

Get the entire 'Lamb' collection for the holidays or after. Kettering Rotarian Bob Lamb has two books available, one that tells his very personal story about war, life and love, and the other, just released in memory of his wife. Jean Lamb would write and draw inspirational poems of love, family life and spirituality. She passed away earlier this year and Bob and his family created the book to raise funds for Hospice of Dayton and the Alzheimer's Association. A $20.00 donation will get you Jean's book 'A Kiss on the Magic Spot' - truly a heart warming gift for the holiday.

Kettering Rotary  - 1/9/13

The Kettering Rotary met at Presential Banquet Center on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. The meeting was called to order by President Don Walls who welcomed the group to the first meeting of the New Year. As is tradition, the club celebrated the month’s birthdays.

Mel Haines reminded the group to update their information on the website and an announcement of the slate of Rotary officers for 2013-2014 was read. Nominations were requested. No nominations were provided from the floor and the officers were approved.

Mel gave the invocation.

Our Birthday Chair, Tom Minnich, led the birthday celebration by introducing all those with their birthday’s during the month of January.

The January birthdays included:

Paul Halcomb (1/3) who has served as a Rotarian since July of 1972

Bud Ragan (who is still in Florida) (1/4) a Rotarian since 1982

Don Whip (1/7) a Rotarian since 1965, our longest serving Rotarian and very special for his 48 years of perfect attendance!

Bobbie Roland-Gorman (1/11) serving in Rotary since 1988

And last but not least Don Patterson (1/14) a member of Rotary since 1993

Tom Minnich led the birthday song for the group and then went onto lead both the song and pledge. “God Bless America” was the song of choice.

Andy Scholes served as the Sergeant of Arms. He sat at the greeter table taking notes while eavesdropping on conversations. Fines were issued to Beth for her support of Notre Dame, Jeff Lewis for his constant complaining, Kathy Johnson for not wearing a Rotary pin (a newspaper photo served as evidence), Tim Leist for his motorskills, Don Patterson for setting record attendance, Norm for griping about how hard the greeter position is, and Missy Mae for being deprived as a child (she has never been  sledding).

Jane Black, the Executive Director of the Dayton Art Institute, served as this week’s speaker. She informed the group of new programs being sponsored by the Institute. She as well spoke about how the Institute is trying to become a more welcoming place for all in the community. Jane is a product of the South Suburbs and was once a student of President Don Walls in elementary school.  Ms. Black is very passionate about the DAI and welcomed all to visit and obtain membership in the organization.

Don Patterson’s ticket was drawn for Luck of the Draw but he did not pick the right card.

Missy Mae Walters – Scribe for the day.

A BIG 'thank you!' to Beth Ling and her girls who took our small mountain of schools supplies and a cash donation of $200 to 'Crayons to Classrooms'.  (Note that Beth's daughter is sporting a KRC T Shirt!  Way to go!) KRC is proud to support so many local students and teachers with our donations, financial support, literary programs and mentoring. This is our first year with the Crayons to Classrooms supply drive and I'd say it was quite a success!

Wende's Last Meeting - Minute to Win It Challenges

Posted by Brenda Stansfield on Jun 21, 2011

Wende's last 'official' meeting was a day of fun and fellowship!  We had challenges (and PRIZES!) for the winning members and teams. We played:

Hanky Panky, Movin' on  Up, Junk in the Trunk (video below) and Bobble Head PLUS each table competed in a crafting challenge to create the ROTARY wheel.  Missed it? Want to re-live it?  I'll be posting an album on line with more fun and frolic soon... so... stay tuned!

A MINUTE TO WIN IT' - JUNK IN THE TRUNK: Each contestant is trying to shake ping pong balls out of their 'trunk' and spell out R-O-T-A-R-Y! Just one of the summer games we played today. Watch for some great photos of other challenges... coming soon! Woody was the victor, but only beat out Bob L by a fraction of a second... it came down to spelling out ROTARY faster.

SAR Lights were invented by a past Kettering Rotary Firefighter of the Year Recipient (Dale Booher KRCFFY 1996) . They are designed to attach to the firefighters helmet, thus keeping their hands free for equipment, and lighting the way safely for the fire fighter. We are proud to be giving back to those who give so much to our community.

Honoring our Past

Posted by Brenda Stansfield

Last week I had the honor of attending The President's Club Legion of Honor luncheon on behalf of Kettering Rotary and as the guest of Vectren at the invitation of fellow Rotarian Lynda Hoffman.  Thank you Lynda, it was much appreciated to be in the presence of over 400 mover and shakers in the Dayton area as Judge Rice joined the wall of fame of truly great men and women in the Miami Valley.

Three of our past Kettering Rotary Presidents were on the wall of fame, cast in bronze - it made me, once again, extremely proud to be a member of our club.  The history of our club should not be lost, the work we do should be celebrated. Here, for those of you who may not have had the pleasure to see the Legion of Honor wall at the Convention Center, are our past Rotarians:

Brenda Stansfield started the meeting talking about the dinner she attended for the Legion of Honor and mentioned the fine Kettering Rotarians (three of them) who are on the wall.

She also announced that after ten years of service as song leader, Chuck Sunderland is looking to retire his pitch pipe. Any volunteers to lead us?

With Wende’s leave of absence, Mel has re-inherited the duty roster. Kathy Johnson volunteered to take that over.

Lisa Routsong introduced guests, which included her friend and prospective member Melissa.

Paul Holcomb gave the invocation, but before he did, he mentioned that his pharmacy was involved in Sunday’s robbery, and he was glad not to have been there. (we’re glad for that too, Paul!)

Tom Minnich led us in song: “The Happy Wanderer”

Mark Schweiterman served as SAA. He fined Kathy Johnson for being on the radio representing her bank, he also levied future fines against his fellow representatives of the City of Kettering for not being there to hear his program. Trivia time included facts about the City, which raised little money . . .

Happy dollars included:

·         Lou Ponziani announced that his only granddaughter got married two weeks ago and had a lovely wedding at Moraine CC.

·         Don Walls gave an update on Steve Huelsman who is now part-time with the City of Middletown and recently had a clear cancer scan.

·         Proud mama Brenda highlighted the successes of her son who has been a media star over the last week. Last night he was honored by the City of West Carrollton for the mural he created.

·         Tom Minnich announced that Ohio State’s marching band will play at the Schuster Center on Nov. 9.

·         Woody Stroud gave bucks for Miami’s first football victory against Army and the patriotism that was on display

·         Paul Holcomb mentioned that he enjoyed Saturday’s band competition at Fairmont

·         Digger highlighted two events at David’s Cemetery which featured the City’s VIPs

·         Mark Schweiterman gave a buck for walking past the woman who robbed his usual Speedway.

Following his duties as SAA, Mr. Schweiterman shifted gears and assumed the role of speaker, after a warm intro from Tom Gabrielson!

Mark highlighted the latest activities in the City of Kettering, including:

·         The many upgrades in the Parks & recreation department, which amounted to $18-19 million of renovations due to the passing of the bond levy

·         Construction on Wilmington Pike/Dorothy Lane intersection is coming to an end later this month. This was a $5 million project, which used less than $100,000 of city funds.

·         The city’s first marked bike lane opened on Forrer.

Mark also provided an update on projects planned for 2012, but you had to attend to get all the great scoop on those! After a great presentation, Mark fielded a number of questions.

Announcements followed. Larry Hodapp announced the paul Harris Fellow raffle. Beth Ling mentioned that we are just over two weeks out from the Run For Your Life (Oct 28). We’re still seeking volunteers and have flyers available for distribution.

Lisa Routsong received her Every Rotarian Every Year sticker.

After careful consideration of the cards, Bruce Jump won the Luck of the Draw!

Want a Presidential Pardon?

Posted by Brenda Stansfield

Membership is the life blood of every service club. This year I am committed to spreading our Kettering Rotary love to others in our community, and every member can help!  How? First and foremost - get involved or stay involved with our club service projects.  There is something that everyone of you can do.  Join a committee, volunteer at the meetings and tell people about the good that we do.

Now, the fun part - I will 'Pardon' any Rotarian from having to pay any fines when they bring a potential member to a meeting. You'll get a coin that you can use at a future meeting to pass the buck ... to me! Yep, I'll pick up your fines for that meeting and what's more - if your guest becomes a member - I'll give you a gold coin that is good for a month of fines!  Of course, there are a couple of things you should know. I DO have a 'Debt Limit' of $2.00 per Rotarian per meeting (so no you can't go crazy to get my monies!) Second, even if you are fined $3.00 in a meeting, I'll cover two and the other is waived.

In addition - we want to have a little Rotary Competitive Spirit.  So... everytime you volunteer or give service to the club - we'll be watching (Yep, a bit of big brother) and soon we'll give awards for our Super Rotarians and our UBER Rotarian!  We're after 100% participation from our club.

So just to entice you... check out my coinage!

Our 2010 Holiday Party was a blast.  Thank you for everyone who came out to spread a little holiday cheer and toast another great year in Rotary.

The club met at Fleming's Steakhouse and were gifted with a personalized goblet for each guest. Rotary symbols for the members, snowflakes for their guests. Congratulations to the Luther's as the 'Ugly Sweater' contest winners! After a great meal we entertained ourselves by trying to 'toot' out holiday songs and a 'rousing' rendition of 'Viva la Rotary!' .  With paper crowns on our heads it was now time for the anticipated White Elephant Exchange. The 'hot' item was the bag of ugly sweaters - with Paul Holcomb the 'winner' - I think he has his sights on next years prize for the 'Ugly Sweater' contest.

We've uploaded some pictures on the Club Site so take a look. Need a print of a favorite holiday picture?  Email me and I'll get you one!
